God of Occupation

Japanese: 職業神 - しょくぎょうしん

People earn a living by doing various jobs, and seek God's protection so that their work goes well. Even among Christians, certain occupational groups sometimes venerate certain patron saints, but in Japan, in particular, various gods have been worshiped according to people's occupations. Farmers worship the rice field god, who protects rice cultivation. Depending on the region, the rice field god is called the crop god, agricultural god, peasant god, earth god, boar god, and so on, and the way of worshiping him also varies, but generally, when talking about rice field gods, they are often worshiped on stones or trees at a fixed rice field as a shrine.

人はいろいろの仕事をして暮しをたてるが，その仕事が順調であるように神の加護を求める。キリスト教徒の間でも，職業集団によって特定の守護聖人を崇敬することがあるが，日本ではことに，生業によりさまざまな神がまつられてきた。　農民のあいだでは，稲作を守護してくれる神として田の神をまつる。田の神は地域によって作神，農神，百姓神，地神，亥の神などと呼ばれそのまつり方もちがうが，一般に田の神といえばある定まった田を祭場に，石や木をもってまつる形が多い。
