Located in northern Iraq, about 25 km northeast of Mosul, this site is the standard for stratigraphic relationships in the prehistoric period of northern Mesopotamia. Tepe Gaura means "Great Mound" and is an elliptical mound with a major axis of about 170 m and a height of 22 m, making it the largest tell in the area. It provides the richest collection of data, from the XX layer of the Halaf period (Halaf culture) in the 5th millennium BC to the I layer, where the Hurrians lived in the mid-2nd millennium BC. The site was excavated in 1931-38 by a joint expedition dispatched by the American Institute of Oriental Studies in Baghdad and the University Museum of Pennsylvania, alternately led by E. A. Speiser and C. Bache. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
