Thin man - Seino

Japanese:
Thin man - Seino

One of the ancient dances. It is also written as Seino or Koeno, and is also called "Saino". There are many unknown points about the origin of Hoso-o, but since it is connected to the legend of Iso-ra, the god who governs the underwater world, it is often discussed from that aspect. According to the legend, Iso-ra had an ugly face, so he covered his face with the sleeves of his jo-e and came out of the sea with a drum around his neck. The Eiga Monogatari states that "the Hoso-o of the Goryoe Festival hid his face with a hand towel," so it is thought that the Hoso-o of the Heian period was related to the Goryoe Festival. The appearance of the Hoso-o at the Kasuga Wakamiya Festival, which is said to have started in 1136 (Hōen 2), is well known to this day. Six people wearing eboshi hats, white jo-e robes, and white masks appear, two of whom play flutes, two of whom beat waist drums with both hands, and the other two dance while covering their masks with their right sleeves. The white mask and drum are characteristic of the Hosoo, but the Isora Kakko dance at Yawata Shikanoumi Shrine in Shikanoshima, Fukuoka City is also likely to be that of the Hosoo. Hosoo is also seen in dolls, and puppet dolls of the Hosoo are handed down at Kohyo Shrine in Yoshitomi-cho, Chikujo-gun, Fukuoka Prefecture, and Kohyo Shrine in Itoda, Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. The theory that Hosoo and Zae no Onoko are the same is said to be different, as there is no historical evidence to support this.
