〘Noun〙① Benevolence and righteousness. "Benevolence" is loving people and things broadly. "Righteousness" is finding joy in things and following the right path. It is the main thought of Mencius and the virtue most highly valued in Confucianism. ※Shoku Nihongi - Keiun 3rd year (706), March Dingshi "Moral benevolence and _{righteousness} depend on the promotion of courtesy. 〘名〙① 仁と義。「仁」はひろく人や物を愛すること。「義」は物事のよろしきを得て正しい筋道にかなうこと。孟子の主要な思想で、儒教で最も重んじる徳目。※続日本紀‐慶雲三年（706）三月丁巳「道徳仁義、因_レ礼乃弘。教訓正俗、待_レ礼而成」※太平記（１４Ｃ後）一「仁義は大道の廃れたる処に出で」〔孟子‐梁恵王・上〕② 世間一般の道徳。社会生活を送るうえで必要な良識や義理。※蓮如御文章（1461‐98）二「ことにほかには王法をもておもてとし、内心には他力の信心をふかくたくはへて、世間の仁義をもて本とすべし」③ (「じんぎ（辞宜）」からか) 博徒、香具師(やし)、ある種の職人など特殊な仲間のあいだの道徳。また、その間で行なわれる初対面の挨拶(あいさつ)。※香具師奥義書（1929）〈和田信義〉香具師細見「香具師仲間で取り交はす挨拶、即ち遊人や土方仲間ではジンギと云ふものを稽古する」
