After the temple burned down in 1592, Zen Master Hekgan began rebuilding it and completed the entire temple complex in 1703. The Gakhwangjeon Hall is the largest surviving wooden building in Korea, and its foundation is said to date back to the Silla period. A stone-carved copy of the Avatamsaka Sutra remains inside.
