〘noun〙 (gesture)① A gesture, hand movement, facial expression, etc. that is used to express or communicate some emotion or will to the other person as an aid to verbal expression. ※New York (1914)〈Harada Muneichiro〉The old woman at the boarding house "She waves her hands, sticks out her head, and uses a variety of gestures to speak like a reel ."② Saying something to attract the other person's attention, or showing an attitude that is indicative of something, even though it is not what you really think. ※Female student (1939)〈Dazai Osamu〉"He may be a good person, but he makes too many gestures."③ A game in which players use gestures and body movements to show a given word or sentence, and have someone on their team guess the original word or sentence. Usually, players are divided into two teams and compete to see who can get the most correct answers. ※Musei War Diary〈Tokugawa Musei〉 October 24, 1942 (Showa 17) "The players were divided into the Genji and Heike sides, and made gestures to represent historical figures. The winner was decided by the total score."
