A hadith scholar born in Tirmidh (now Termiz) in the upper reaches of the Amu Darya. Although blind, he traveled to Khorasan, Hijaz, and other places to collect traditions. The result of his work, Sunan al-Tirmidhi (also known as Jāmi' al-ṣaḥīḥ), which contains about 4,000 works, is counted among the six books of hadith. The contents of this book have been criticized for being biased toward the Shiite sect, but it also contains many tafsir (interpretations of the Quran) and information about the Prophet and his companions.

アム･ダリヤ上流ティルミズ(現，テルメス)生れのハディース学者。盲目ながらホラーサーン，ヒジャーズなどを遍歴して伝承収集に努めた。その成果の約4000を収めた《スナンの書Sunan al‐Tirmidhī》(別名Jāmi‘ al‐ṣaḥīḥ)はハディース六書の一つに数えられている。この書の内容にはシーア派への偏向がみられるとの批判もあるが，タフシール(コーラン解釈)や預言者および教友に関する事項も多い。
