A biennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It is found throughout Japan and the temperate zone of East Asia, and commonly grows in forests in mountains and fields. The stems reach a height of 50-100 cm, are hairy at the top, and branch out in a bifurcated manner. The leaves are whitish-green and hairy, and the basal leaves disappear when they flower. The stems and leaves are oblong and have glandular dots on the underside. From September to November, sessile flower heads grow one at a time in the leaf axils, facing downward. The involucre segments overlap like scales, and the plant is bell-shaped overall. The corolla is yellow, with female flowers on the periphery and bisexual flowers in the center. The achenes are blackish brown with small thorns at the tips, and exude mucus with a unique odor. The juice squeezed from the leaves is effective for wounds, and the roots and seeds are also used medicinally.
