The National Gallery is located on the River Thames in London. It was founded in 1889 when Lord Henry Tate (1819-99), who made his fortune from sugar, donated 60 British paintings to the museum, and opened in 1997 with 250 works thanks to his donation of a building. It was an annex of the National Gallery until it became an independent institution in 1955. In 1917, with the addition of 39 works by Lord Hugh Percy Lane, the museum began to exhibit modern art from abroad as well. Today, it is the largest institution in the country that covers works by British artists from 1545 onwards, and also plays the role of a modern art museum that exhibits paintings, sculptures, and prints by foreign artists from 1870 onwards.
