(ii) A mask made of paper or other materials used for disguise. ※Meguriahi (1888-89)〈Translated by Futabatei Shimei〉 2 "How did he know? Zura [face]

〘Phrases〙① When attached to a noun or the conjunctive form of a verb, it means that the person has a certain look on their face. A word used to express insults. "Bakazura (idiot face) ," "akuninzura (bad guy face)," "yonjuzura (forty-year-old guy face)," etc. ※Joruri, Shinban Kasaibun (Osome Hisamatsu) (1780), Nozaki Village "It seems as if that sick face will not enter." ② When attached to a person's name, it is a word used to express insults about that person. ※Joruri, Oyamauba (around 1712), 2 "The face of that right general is obstructing him." ③ When attached to a noun describing a geographical feature, it means the side or beside it, or the surface. づら【面】

〘語素〙① 名詞または動詞連用形に付いて、そのような顔つきをしている意を表わす。ののしっていう語。「馬鹿(ばか)づら」「悪人づら」「四十づら」など。※浄瑠璃・新版歌祭文(お染久松)(1780)野崎村「アノ病ひづらが這入らぬ様ふに」② 人名に付いて、その人をののしっていう語。※浄瑠璃・嫗山姥(1712頃)二「あの右大将づらめにさまたげられ」③ 地形を表わす名詞に付いて、それの側面、そばの意、また、表面の意を表わす。「川づら」「海づら」「山づら」など。[補注]②については、「面」でなく「列(つら)」または「連(つれ)」の変化とする説もある。

おも【面】
