A small island in the Sea of Japan, about 40km northwest of Sakata City, in the northwest of Yamagata Prefecture. It is part of Sakata City. It has a circumference of 12km, and its highest point, Takamoriyama, is 69m above sea level. It is an uplifted sea-cut platform, with about 10 reefs scattered in the southwest. Relics from the Jomon and Yayoi periods have been excavated from the island, and it has a long history of habitation. During the Edo period, it prospered as a port of call for sailing ships sailing the Sea of Japan, with more than 500 ships calling at the port annually. Its main industry is fishing. Omonoimijinja Shrine is a shrine listed in the Shikinai (Engineering Standards) that enshrines the wind god and is paired with Omonoimijinja Shrine on Mount Chokai (2,236m). Every July, a fire-matching event is held with Fukiura on the opposite shore. Ozushijima Island and Otsumijima Island to the west are breeding grounds for black-tailed gulls and are designated as national natural monuments. Almost the entire area, including the Zushijima Islands, belongs to Chokai Quasi-National Park. Area 2.70km 2 (2003). Population 316 (2000).
