Also known as soapwort. A perennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family native to Europe and Western Asia. The base of the stem creeps along the ground, the upper part stands upright, and is 40-80cm tall, with stalkless, lanceolate leaves arranged in pairs. In May and June, it produces cymes that bloom with pale pink to white, five-petaled flowers 2-3cm across. The foam juice that comes out of the stems and leaves is used as a soap substitute, and the dried roots are used medicinally. The ingredients are saponin and saponarin. It has beautiful flowers and is cold-resistant, so it is planted as a perennial plant in flower beds. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
