The capital of the Rondônia Territory in western Brazil. Population 226,198 (1991). It is a river port facing the Madeira River, a tributary of the Amazon River, and the city's name means "old port." It is about 100 meters above sea level. There is a paved road (878 km) to Manaus. It is about 1,400 km south to Cuiabá. It is 160 km from the Bolivian border. There is an airport. During the rubber boom at the end of the 19th century, the Madeira-Mamoré Railway was built to the border town of Guajara-Mirim, avoiding the waterfalls on the Madeira River, in order to transport rubber to Bolivia (famous for the difficult construction work that resulted in many deaths).
