1894‐1990 Chinese educator. Born in Bazhong County, Sichuan Province. Graduated from Yale University in the United States and received his doctorate from Princeton University. In 1918, he worked in France to teach literacy to Chinese workers. In 1923, he founded the Chinese Association for Promoting Education for the Commoners with Tao Xingzhi and Huang Yanpei, and worked hard with Liang Shuming on "village construction." In 1932, he established an experimental rural education area in Ding County, Hebei Province. When the People's Republic of China was founded, he fled to Taiwan and later moved to the Philippines.
