Year of death: November 18, 1654 (December 26, 1654) Year of birth: Tensho 5 (1577) A painter of the Kano school in the Momoyama and early Edo periods. He was the founder of the Okachimachi Kano family, one of the official painters of the shogunate. He was the fourth son of Shoei and went by the pen name Kyūhaku. During the Keichō era (1596-1615), he had an audience with Tokugawa Ieyasu in Kyoto, and then travelled to Sunpu to become his official painter. He went to Edo around 1605, and became Hokkyō in 1625 (Kan'ei 2), where he died. He was one of the earliest painters to fully work for the Tokugawa family, and played an extremely important role in opening the door for the Kano family to later become official painters for the shogunate. His representative work is the "Leisure under the Flowers Screen" (Tokyo National Museum).
