A full-length novel by Kikuchi Kan. It was serialized in the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun and Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun in 1920. It is a love-hate drama depicting Ruriko, who is married off to an elderly man who is wealthy in shipping due to her father's debts, as she manipulates men to get by while maintaining her chastity for the sake of her lover Naoya. 菊池寛の長編小説。大正9年（1920）大阪毎日新聞・東京日日新聞で連載。父の借金により船成金の老人のもとに嫁がされた瑠璃子が、恋人直也のため貞操を守りつつ、男たちを手玉にとって生きてゆくさまを描いた愛憎劇。主人公のモデルは歌人の柳原白蓮とされる。数多くの映画化・ドラマ化作品がある。
