The Consolation of Philosophy - De consolatione philosophiae
Boethius' last work. In 523, he was dismissed from his position as "magister officiorum" and imprisoned for plotting a rebellion against Theodoric, the Ostrogothic king who ruled Italy at the time through his friendship with the Eastern Roman emperor. He wrote this book in prison until his execution in 525 (or 526). It consists of five books, and is written in the "Menippian" style, alternating verse and prose. The book is presented in the form of a "philosophy" allegorized as a goddess, which answers the various questions posed by the man who had gone from being a high-ranking official to being a prisoner and suffering misfortune. The book focuses on the relationship between God and the world, centering on a Neoplatonic interpretation of Plato's "Timaeus."
