Galapagos penguin

A seabird of the family Spheniscus, order Aves. It is a small species of penguin, measuring about 50cm in length, and is found only in the tropical Galapagos Islands. When cold, nutrient-rich upwelling currents occur around the islands, they begin molting and breeding. They lay two eggs per clutch, and breeding success depends on the abundance of food that accompanies these upwelling currents. They spend the night on land.

鳥綱ペンギン目ペンギン科の海鳥。ペンギン科のなかでは全長50センチメートルほどの小形の種類で、熱帯ガラパゴス諸島だけに分布する。島の周りで冷たく栄養分の豊かな湧昇流(ゆうしょうりゅう)がおこると、換羽、繁殖を開始する。1腹2卵を産むが、繁殖の成否はこの湧昇流に伴う餌(えさ)の豊富さによる。夜間は陸にあがって過ごす。
