Mahāyāna-śāmahayāna

A Buddhist book. A representative work by Asanga, the great master of the Yogacara-Yindependence theory of Indian Buddhism. The original Sanskrit text has been lost, but four Chinese translations by Buddhasenta, Zhendi, Bodhidharma-Gyutaka, and Xuanzang, as well as a Tibetan translation, remain. This treatise summarizes the essence of Mahayana Buddhism from the perspective of Yogacara-Yindependence theory in 10 chapters. In China, Zhendi's translation was the most widely circulated before Xuanzang's translation, and it was the basis for the development of the Shelun sect. After Xuanzang's translation, completed in 649 (the 23rd year of the Zhenguan era), it replaced Zhendi's translation, and was actively studied in the Hosso sect as one of the most basic classics.

仏教書。インド仏教瑜伽唯識(ゆがゆいしき)説の大成者無著(むじゃく)の代表的著作。サンスクリット原典は散逸したが、仏陀扇多(ぶっだせんた)、真諦(しんだい)、達摩笈多(だつまぎゅうた)、玄奘(げんじょう)による漢訳4本、さらにチベット訳が現存する。大乗仏教の精髄を唯識説の立場から10章にまとめて示した論典。中国では、玄奘訳以前に真諦訳がもっともよく流布し、これを中心に摂論(しょうろん)宗がおこった。649年（貞観23）完了の玄奘訳が現れてからは、これが真諦訳にとってかわり、法相(ほっそう)宗ではもっとも基本的な典籍の一つとして盛んに研究された。
