This alga was first given the scientific name Phylloderma sacrum Suringar as a new genus and species by WFR Suringar (1872-74), but the name was later changed to the above in 1953 as there was no reason to make it a separate genus from Aphanothece . Lake Ezu in Suizenji, Kumamoto City, has been designated a national natural monument as the birthplace of Aphanotheca sacrum, but it is now thought to be extinct and can no longer be seen. ...

…群体はやや固い寒天質で，押しつぶして顕微鏡でみると，内部に大きさ3.5～4.0μm×6～7μmの楕円形，暗緑色の多数の細胞が埋在する状態がわかる。この藻は初めスリンハーW.F.R.Suringarにより新属新種としてPhylloderma sacrum Suringarの学名が与えられた(1872‐74)が，後にAphanotheceと別属にする理由がないとして1953年に上記のように学名が変わった。熊本市水前寺の江津（えづ）湖はスイゼンジノリ発生地として国の天然記念物の指定を受けているが，現在は絶滅したらしく，見られない。…
