This slave trade encouraged armed conflicts among coastal tribes for the purpose of slave hunting, which led to the decline of the Kongo Kingdom. In the late 16th century, when the Jaga (Yaga) tribe invaded, the Kongo received support from the Portuguese army, and the equal relationship between the two countries came to an end. In 1665, the Portuguese army attacked the Kongo Kingdom and killed the then King Antonio I (1661-65), which led to the severing of relations between the two countries and the devastating blow to the Kongo Kingdom itself. …
