A type of namemiso. Roasted soybeans, chopped burdock, etc. are fried in oil, then added to red miso, sugar, and chili peppers, and the mixture is kneaded. The name may have been a reference to the spiciness of the chili peppers, which is likened to the thrill of a gambling den. It seems to have been a favorite of the common people of Edo, and Morisada Manko states that burdock, ginger, chili pepper, dried squid, etc. are added to weekday miso, fried in sesame oil, and sold at "namemono-ya" (namemono shop). Namemono was a general term for namemiso, shiokara, hishio, etc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
