Yamataka Shigeri - Yamataka Shigeri

Feminist. Born in Mie Prefecture. Dropped out of Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School. Married (later divorced) at the age of 21. After working as a newspaper and magazine journalist, she founded the Women's Suffrage Promotion Association (later the Women's Suffrage Association) in 1924 (Taisho 13) and promoted the movement together with Ichikawa Fusae. In 1934 (Showa 9), she founded the Maternity Protection League. In 1939, she founded the Women's Current Affairs Research Association, aiming to improve the status of women while cooperating with wartime national policy. She served as a director of the Greater Japan Women's Association and a member of the Central Cooperation Council of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association. After World War II, she worked to foster local women's organizations, and served as chairperson of the National Liaison Council of Local Women's Organizations and secretary-general of the National Council of Widows' Organizations. She was a member of the House of Councilors from 1962 to 1971.

女性運動家。三重県生まれ。東京女子高等師範中退。21歳で結婚（のち離婚）。新聞・雑誌記者を経て、1924年（大正13）婦人参政権獲得期成同盟会（のち婦選獲得同盟）を結成、市川房枝とともに運動を推進。1934年（昭和9）母性保護連盟を結成。1939年婦人時局研究会を創立、戦時国策に協力しつつ女性の地位向上を目ざす。大日本婦人会理事、大政翼賛会中央協力会議員を歴任。第二次世界大戦後は地域婦人団体の育成に努め、全国地域婦人団体連絡協議会会長、全国未亡人団体協議会事務局長としても活動。1962～1971年参議院議員。
