The southern region of Israel that stretches from the Sinai Peninsula is generally a dry desert area. In the north, which stretches to the Mediterranean coastal plain, is the central city of Be'er Sheba. In the central region, a folded mountain range extends from the Sinai Peninsula, containing various mineral resources that are being developed. In the south, a desolate desert stretches all the way to the Gulf of Aqaba. Eilat, at the southern end, is a strategically important port as Israel's only outlet to the Red Sea. Irrigation canals extend from Lake Tiberias and the Yarkon River to the Negev, and agricultural development is underway. There is also an oil pipeline between Eilat and Haifa, and the atomic research city of Dimona is located there, making this a strategically important region for Israel.
