An evergreen perennial plant of the orchid family. It grows on trees in warm areas west of the Tokai region. The stems are short and upright, covered with two rows of old leaf sheaths. The leaves are broadly linear and curved, with a deep vertical groove on the underside and a joint at the base. In summer, a single flower stalk emerges from the lower leaf axil, and 3 to 10 white flowers grow at the end of the long stalk. All six tepals are recurved and have a long spur. The fruit is club-shaped. It is often cultivated as an ornamental plant, and there are many horticultural varieties with variations in leaf shape.
