1428‐68 Italian sculptor. Born into a family of stonemasons in Florence, he was registered with the local sculptors' guild in 1453. During his short career, he was mainly involved in the production of the Tomb of Carlo Malzuppini in the Church of Santa Croce in Florence and the altar sculpture for the Sacristy of the Church of San Lorenzo. He excelled in bas-relief sculpture, and was influenced by Donatello's stiacciato technique, but in contrast to Donatello's intense emotional expression and powerful realism, his work is characterized by delicate decorative effects that soften the light and wrap it in light and shade.
