A town in Tomamae County, Hokkaido. Most of the town is mountainous, with lowlands on the Japan Sea coast. Coal mining began in earnest around 1941, and the town developed rapidly. The Haboro Coal Mine Railway ran from Chikubetsu on the Haboro Line to the Haboro Coal Mine, but the mine closed in 1970 and the railway was also discontinued. The town is mainly involved in agriculture (paddy rice, field crops, livestock, etc.) and fishing. The islands of Teuri and Yagishiri are included. 472.65 km2 . 7,964 people (2010). 北海道苫前(とままえ)郡の町。大半が山地で,日本海岸に低地がある。1941年ごろから石炭の採掘が本格化し,急速に発展。羽幌炭礦まで羽幌線築別(ちくべつ)から羽幌炭礦鉄道が通じていたが,1970年炭鉱が閉山し鉄道も廃止された。水稲,畑作,畜産などの農業と漁業が中心。天売(てうり)島,焼尻(やぎしり)島がある。472.65km2。7964人(2010)。
