…At first it was a small newspaper that mainly featured novels and popular articles, but it gradually took on the character of a news-oriented newspaper, and its circulation increased due to its accurate and prompt reporting from the time of the establishment of the Diet to around the time of the First Sino-Japanese War. In 1888, it acquired the Mesamashi Shimbun, which was managed by Toru Hoshi, and succeeded in expanding into Tokyo as the Tokyo Asahi Shimbun (the Osaka Asahi Shimbun was renamed the Osaka Asahi Shimbun the following year). During the period between the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War, its extensive economic articles were well received, and its article on the Siege of Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion attracted worldwide attention.
