The mausoleum of King Mausolus of Caria in Halicarnassus (now Bodrum), Greece, is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Construction began just before the king's death (353 BC), and was completed after his death by his wife Artemisia and other members of the royal family. It is a magnificent structure with a colonnade on a base and a pyramidal roof, and the frieze is decorated with sculptures of battles between Greeks and Amazons. Later, the term came to mean a mausoleum in general. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
