Italian author and Radical Party city council member. His birthplace, Racalmuto, is in the southwest inland of Sicily, a stronghold of the Mafia. The oppressed regional character that even Fascism attached hope for liberation from the Mafia, and the author's European character, which includes Arab elements, rooted in that region, express a literary world that is fundamentally different from that of authors from the east coast, such as Berga, while sharing a realism that stands on the side of the people. He made it his responsibility as a writer to portray the true image of the people who are not asleep by denying the myths of fate and immutability that were imposed on the people of the south, and by exposing the injustices of power structures, state systems, and historical writing.

イタリアの作家。急進党市議。生地ラカルムートはマフィアの拠点であるシチリア島南西内陸部にある。ファシズムにすらマフィアからの解放の希望をつないだ抑圧された地域性と，そこに根ざした作者のアラブ的要素を包含するヨーロッパ性とが，民衆側に立つリアリズムを共有しつつも，ベルガなど東海岸出身の作家のそれと本質的に異なる文学世界を表出させている。宿命性，不変性という，南部の民衆に押しつけられた神話の否定と，権力機構と国家体制，歴史記述の不正の糾明を通して，眠っていない民衆の真実の姿を描写することを作家としての責務とした。
