Japanese: 回り灯籠 - まわりどうろう

Also called a revolving lantern or a shadow lantern. A type of lantern. The inner frame is round and has various paper-cut pictures pasted on it, while the outer frame is a square or round double lantern, with the inside rotating on a central axis. Furthermore, a windmill is attached to the top of the inner frame, and when a candle inside is lit, the rising air currents from the heat cause the inner frame to rotate, and the shadow of the paper-cut picture is reflected on the outer frame as it rotates. It has been a familiar feature of summer since the Edo period, but today there are various types of rotating lanterns made from a variety of materials and with a variety of rotation methods.

走馬灯，影灯籠ともいう。灯籠の一種。内枠は丸形でいろいろな切り紙絵を張り，外枠は角形ないし丸形の二重灯籠とし，中央の軸で内側が回転する。さらに内枠の上部に風車を取付け，中のろうそくに点火すると，その熱気の上昇気流によって内枠が回転し，切り絵の影が回りながら外枠に映って見える。江戸時代から夏の風物詩の一つとして親しまれてきたが，現在では資材や回転方法も多様化した各種の回り灯籠がある。
