English and others from the United States discovered that the wound hormone was present in the pods themselves, which were used as materials for this study. In 1939, they isolated the substance as crystals and identified it as traumatic acid (⊿ ^1- decene-1,10-dicarboxylic acid, HOOC-CH=CH-(CH ₂ ) ₈ -COOH).
