…In the families Hectocotylidae and Hectocotylidae, males are dwarf males, only about 1/20 the size of females, but their hectocotyls are long and whip-shaped at the end, and when mating to transfer spermatophores, the hectocotyls break off and remain inside the female's body. The modern naturalist Cuvier, who discovered this in the Hectocotylid, mistook it for a parasite that lives in the mantle cavity of octopuses and named it Hectocotylus octopodis (1829), and since then, the hectocotyls of cephalopods are still called hectocotylus today. Eggs are usually laid in egg sacs attached to the stalk. …
