This village is located about 30km south of Lalitpur in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh in northern India and is known for its stone temple commonly known as the "Shrine of the Ten Incarnations." Three high reliefs on the outer wall, including "Vishnu reclining on the dragon Ananta," are said to date to the early 6th century and are masterpieces of Gupta period Hindu art, characterized by powerful, voluptuous bodies and well-balanced, harmonious expression. On the mountain to the east, there are more than 30 Jain temples dating from the 9th to 12th centuries, and many sculptures remain. [Koezuka Takashi]
