Torii Kiyomasu - Take it

Japanese:
Torii Kiyomasu - Take it

Ukiyo-e artist from the mid-Edo period. There are two generations: the first and second.

First generation

Dates of birth and death unknown. A representative artist of the early Torii school, he is considered to be on a par with the founder of the Torii school, the first Torii Kiyonobu. He is said to be Kiyonobu's son, but there is no definite proof, and he is also said to be his brother or the same person. He began to work in earnest around 1710 (7th year of the Hoei period), and at his peak around 1715 (5th year of the Shotoku period), he produced many paintings of actors full of heroic feeling that developed the Kiyonobu style, as well as refined and elegant portraits of beautiful women. Most of these are brush-painted works known as tan-e, and his representative works include "Ichikawa Danjūrō's Bamboo Extraction," "Kusazuribiki," "Shibaraku," "Zōbiki," and "The Prostitute and the Bald." He is believed to have died young, around 1720.

2nd Generation

His birth and death years are unknown, but one theory is that he was born between 1706 and 1763. He was the adopted son of the first Kiyonobu (some say he was his daughter-in-law or biological son), and is said to be the second head of the Torii family. After the deaths of the first Kiyonobu and the first Kiyomasa, he was active as a central figure in the Torii school, working with the second Kiyonobu on crimson painting, lacquer painting, and red-printed painting.
