The island is located in the northwest of Hokkaido, in the town of Haboro under the jurisdiction of the Rumoi Subprefectural Bureau. It has an area of 5.50 square kilometers. It is located in the Sea of Japan about 30 kilometers west of the town, facing Yagishiri Island across the Musashi Channel, about 4 kilometers long. A fishing ground was opened after the establishment of Teshiobasho in 1786 (Tenmei 6), and it has been bustling with herring since then. In recent years, it has been used for collecting sea urchins, abalone, kelp, and fishing in the offshore Musashi Deposits. It is a scenic spot designated as Teuri-Yagishiri Prefectural Natural Park, and the northwest coast is lined with cliffs caused by sea erosion, with Byobu Rock and Jorokko Rock in the sea. The surrounding area is a breeding ground for seabirds such as the Auklet and Black-tailed Gull (a national natural monument). There are regular ferry services connecting Haboro Port and Yagishiri Port. Population: 366 (2009).
