Nova-like variable star

Japanese: 新星型変光星 - しんせいがたへんこうせい（英語表記）nova‐like variable

A star that suddenly changes brightness on a large scale, like a nova. It is also called a cataclysmic variable. There are three types of stars that belong to this group: novas, recurrent novae, and dwarf novae. The increase in brightness during the explosion is 10th magnitude or more for novae, 8-10th magnitude for recurrent novae, and 3-5th magnitude for dwarf novae. Nova-type variables are close binary systems consisting of a red star and a white dwarf, and the red star meets the Roche limit for close binary systems, causing gas to leak from the red star to the white dwarf. The leaked gas surrounds the white dwarf in a disk shape and gradually falls onto the white dwarf.

新星のように突然大規模に明るさを変える星。激変星cataclysmic variableともいう。このグループに属する星としては，新星，再帰新星，矮（わい）新星の三つがある。爆発の際の増光は，新星で10等級以上，再帰新星で8～10等級，矮新星で3～5等級である。新星型変光星は赤色星と白色矮星からなる近接連星系で，赤色星は近接連星系のロッシュの限界を満たし，赤色星から白色矮星へガスが流出している。流出したガスは白色矮星のまわりを円盤状に取り巻き，徐々に白色矮星へ降り積もっていく。
