A star that suddenly changes brightness on a large scale, like a nova. It is also called a cataclysmic variable. There are three types of stars that belong to this group: novas, recurrent novae, and dwarf novae. The increase in brightness during the explosion is 10th magnitude or more for novae, 8-10th magnitude for recurrent novae, and 3-5th magnitude for dwarf novae. Nova-type variables are close binary systems consisting of a red star and a white dwarf, and the red star meets the Roche limit for close binary systems, causing gas to leak from the red star to the white dwarf. The leaked gas surrounds the white dwarf in a disk shape and gradually falls onto the white dwarf. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
