A Greek elegiac poet active around 540 BCE. Born into an aristocratic family in Megara, he lost his wealth and status as a victim of the political struggle between the nobles and the people at the time, and lived in exile. The two volumes of 1,382 lines of poems that remain in his name reflect the changes in this struggle. His didactic content and aristocraticism were recognized as having educational value, and he later became widely popular, and a collection of wise sayings and phrases was collected under his name. It is also difficult to determine which works are genuine, as works by predecessors such as Chultaeus, Mimnermus, and Solon are mixed in.
