Folded plate structure

Structures constructed by combining flat plates are called folded plate structures, and can be broadly categorized into two types: (1) those in which flat structures such as floors and walls are folded into a folding screen shape, and (2) those in which curved surfaces are replaced with several flat plates. The bending rigidity of a flat plate is proportional to the cube of the plate thickness, and the thinner it is, the easier it is to bend. By folding it into a folding screen shape, the rigidity is increased (the same effect as increasing the thickness), making it less likely to bend. For this reason, folded plate structures (1), like shell structures, are structures that use their shape to add resistance to loads, and can be said to belong to the form-resisting structure category.

平らな板を組み合わせて構成する構造体を折板構造と呼び，(1)床や壁など，平面状の構造を屛風状に折り曲げるもの，(2)曲面をいくつかの平板で置き換えるものの二つに大別することができる。平らな板の曲げに対する剛性は，板厚の3乗に比例し，薄くなると曲がりやすくなる。屛風状に折り曲げることによって剛性が増し(厚さを増加させるのと同じ効果)，曲がりにくくなる。このことから，(1)の折板構造は，シェル構造と同様に，形態を利用して荷重に対する抵抗能力を付加する構造で，形態抵抗構造に属するといえる。
