Ghost town

Japanese: ゴースト･タウン（英語表記）ghost town

A town that has been abandoned by its residents and is in a state of ruins or nearly so. In the American West, many mining camps became ghost towns after the mines were exhausted. This can be seen as a symbol of the rapid change in American society. However, in arid regions, houses and other buildings are well preserved, so they are repaired and used as movie sets or as tourist destinations. Virginia City in Nevada, once bustling with nearly 30,000 residents including Mark Twain, is said to attract tens of thousands of visitors every week.

住民に見捨てられ廃墟またはそれに近い状態となった町。アメリカの西部では，金銀採掘者のキャンプ(飯場)町の多くが，鉱山の掘りつくされた後，ゴースト･タウンと化した。アメリカ社会の変化の激しさの一つの象徴ともいえる。しかし乾燥地では家屋などの保存状態がよいため，補修して映画のセットに利用されたり，観光地になったりしている。かつてマーク･トウェーンを含めて3万近い住民でにぎわったネバダ州のバージニア･シティVirginia Cityは，毎週数万の見物客を集めているという。
