La Cumparsita (English spelling)

...This is the most widely known tango song. It is said to have been composed by the Uruguayan Gerardo Hernán Matos Rodríguez (c. 1897-1948) when he was a student, and there are various theories about the year it was composed, including 1914 and 1917. It is said to have been premiered by the pianist Roberto Firpo (1884-1969), but there are also other theories. The lyrics are written by Matos Rodríguez himself and by Pascual Contursi and Enrique Maroni in collaboration, and in the mid-1920s, the lyrics by Contursi and Maroni came to be sung by many singers.
