1904‐72 British poet. Born in Ireland, he studied at Oxford University. In the 1930s, together with his friends WH Auden, S. Spender, and L. MacNeice, he wrote poems that denounced the hypocrisy of British society from a Marxist perspective. Among the "Auden group," he stood out for his traditional poetic form and lyricism. The fruits of this period include collections of poems such as The Magnetic Mountain (1933) and Prelude to Death, and Other Poems (1938), as well as the critique Hope for Poetry (1934).
