He is the protagonist of Dyl Ulenspiegel (originally called Ulenspiegel), a series of tales to pass the time, published in 1510-11 by the Grieninger Bookshop in Strasbourg (now Strasbourg). The author is believed to have been Hermann Bothe, a tax clerk in Braunschweig. Born in the village of Kneidlingen near Braunschweig, Till left his village and took up various professions in various places, including as a craftsman, painter, and doctor, and made fun of the people around him, especially arrogant masters, government officials, doctors, nobles, and the pope. This book is a collection of 95 humorous stories.

1510‐11年にシュトラスブルク(現，ストラスブール)のグリーニンガー書店から出版され，版を重ねた《ディル･ウーレンシュピーゲルDyl Ulenspiegelの退屈しのぎ話》の主人公(本来はウーレンシュピーゲルとよんだ)。著者はブラウンシュワイクの徴税書記ヘルマン･ボーテとみられている。　ブラウンシュワイク近くのクナイトリンゲン村に生まれたティルが，村を出て各地で手工業職人や画家，医師などさまざまな職業につきながら，まわりの人々，とくにいばりかえった親方や役人，医者や貴族，教皇などをこけにしてゆく滑稽話が全体で95話集められている。
