A city in the western part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. In 1972, it became a city designated by government ordinance, with five wards established: Chuo, Hakata, Higashi, Nishi, and Minami. In 1982, Nishi-ku was divided into three wards: Nishi, Jonan, and Sawara. It is the prefectural capital. It includes the main part of the Fukuoka Plain, the coastal area of ​​Fukuoka Bay, Shikanoshima, Uminonakamichi, Nokonoshima, and Genkaijima. The central city developed on both sides of the Nakagawa River, which flows into Hakata Bay. The right bank is Hakata, which developed as a key point of continental transportation and a merchant town, and the left bank is Fukuoka, the former castle town of the Kuroda clan with a fief of 520,000 koku. The center is the Tenjin district of Fukuoka, where the city hall and Nishitetsu terminal are located. It is the transportation hub of Kitakyushu, and is served by the Kagoshima Main Line, the Chikuhi, Kashii, Sasaguri, and Hakata Minami lines, the Nishitetsu lines, and the municipal subway, and the areas along these lines are significantly residential. Hakata Station is a Shinkansen station. Kyushu Expressway, National Route 3, and Fukuoka-Maebaru Road pass through the area, and the Fukuoka Urban Expressway runs through the area. There is an airport in Itazuke. Hakata Port is the base for bottom trawl fishing to the west. In addition to industries such as beer, sugar, dairy, electronics, and printing, there are traditional industries such as Hakata weaving, Hakata dolls, and Takatori ware. Kyushu University, Kashii Shrine, Hakozaki Shrine, Kushida Shrine, Sumiyoshi Shrine, Higashi Park, Minami Park, Ohori Park with the ruins of Fukuoka Castle (historic site), Heiwadai General Sports Ground, Mongol Invasion Fortress Ruins (historic site), and Ikinomatsubara in Genkai Quasi-National Park are also famous. Festivals such as Hakata Yamakasa, Dontaku, and Tamaseseri at Hakozaki Shrine are also famous. Suburban agriculture such as vegetable gardening is practiced in the surrounding rural areas. The area is 343.39 km 2 . 1,463,743 (2010).

福岡県西部の市。1889年市制。1972年政令指定都市になり,中央・博多・東・西・南の5区を設置。1982年西区を西,城南,早良(さわら)の3区に分区。県庁所在地。福岡平野主要部と福岡湾岸一帯,志賀島(しかのしま),海ノ中道,能古島,玄界島を含む。中心市街は博多湾に注ぐ那珂川の両岸に発達,右岸は大陸交通の要地,商人町として発展した博多,左岸は黒田氏52万石の旧城下町福岡で,中心は市役所,西鉄ターミナルのある福岡の天神地区。北九州の交通中心をなし,鹿児島本線,筑肥・香椎・篠栗(ささぐり),博多南の各線,西鉄各線,市営地下鉄が通じ,その沿線は住宅地化が著しい。博多駅は新幹線発着駅となっている。九州自動車道,国道3号線,福岡前原道路が通じ,福岡都市高速道路が走る。板付に空港がある。博多港は以西底引網漁業の根拠地。ビール,製糖,乳業,電機,印刷などの工業のほか,博多織,博多人形,高取焼などの伝統産業がある。九州大学,香椎宮,筥崎宮(はこざきぐう),櫛田神社,住吉神社,東公園,南公園,福岡城跡(史跡)のある大濠公園,平和台総合運動場,元寇(げんこう)防塁跡(史跡),玄海国定公園の生(いき)ノ松原などがある。博多山笠,どんたく,筥崎宮の玉せせりなどの祭も有名。周辺農村部では野菜園芸など近郊農業が行われる。343.39km2。146万3743人(2010)。
