Written by Minamoto Mitsuyuki in 1204 (Genkyu 1), this work is a collection of poems based on about half of the stories in "Mongyu" (a book for children written by Li Han in the Tang dynasty), a textbook for children since the Heian period, with Japanese translations of the original notes. It may have been presented to the shogun Minamoto Sanetomo. In the same year, it was combined with "Hyakuei Waka" and "Gafu Waka" (lost), to form a trilogy. It has 14 volumes and is divided into 14 parts: Four Seasons, Love, Celebration, Travel, Leisure, Nostalgia, Reminiscence, Sorrow, Music and Strings, Wine, and Miscellaneous. Composing waka based on Chinese lines has been practiced since the early Heian period, but in "Mongyu Waka," the emphasis has shifted from waka to tales translated from the original notes, making it a pioneering work in the medieval period when tales were popular and Chinese literature was increasingly adopted. It is also an important source for understanding the ancient commentary on "Mongyu," which was read by Japanese people at the time and is now nearly lost.
