Alcobaça

Japanese: アルコバーサ
Alcobaça
A town located about 14km east of Nazaré in central Portugal. Portugal's first king, Afonso I, built the Santa Maria Monastery here in 1153 for the Cistercian Order, which had been instrumental in expelling the Islamic invaders. It is the largest monastery in Portugal, with a facade width of 221m. It is a masterpiece of a Gothic Cistercian monastery, but the facade was remodeled in Baroque style in the 18th century. It is also known for the fact that the coffins of King Pedro I and his lady-in-waiting Ines, who are said to have been the subject of a tragic love story, are enshrined in the chapel. The monastery was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1989.
