One of the two major Islamic sects, alongside Shiite Islam, and the majority sect. Also known as Sunni Islam. Refers to those who follow the Sunnah, which is a record of the words and deeds of Muhammad. There are no divisions within the Sunni sect, but there are four schools of law regarding the interpretation of the law (Sharia): Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi'i, and Hanbali.

シーア派と並ぶイスラムの二大教派の一つで多数派。〈スンニ派〉とも。ムハンマドの言行を記録した〈スンナ〉に従う人びとを意味する。スンナ派には分派はないが，法律（シャリーア）の解釈をめぐってマーリク派，ハナフィー派，シャーフィイー派，ハンバル派の４法学派がある。
