Japanese: 鍬下年季 - くわしたねんき

In the Edo period, this meant exempting land developed into new fields from paying taxes and other duties for a certain period of time. This practice, which had the character of an encouragement measure for the development of new fields, was already seen in 1551 in the territory of the Hojo clan in Adachi County, Musashi Province, during which the lord did not conduct a land survey, and the developer was allowed to take over. The term of this indenture varied from 3, 5, or 7 years in Shogunate territories to 10 or 20 years in feudal lord territories. After the term expired, a land survey was carried out, rice yields were assigned, and annual taxes were determined.

江戸時代，新田開発の地に対して一定の期間，年貢・諸役を免じることをいう。新田開発の奨励策という性格をもつこうした慣行は，すでに1551年武蔵国足立郡の北条氏領内でみられるが，この間領主は検地を行わず，開発者の作り取りとなる。この年季は幕府領では３年・５年・７年などさまざまで，大名領内では10年，20年に及ぶ場合もあった。年季が明けると検地が施行され，石高を付され，年貢が定められた。
