Japan's first national girls' school was opened in February 1872 (Meiji 5) at the former Kameoka domain residence. In November of the same year, it was moved to Takehiracho and came to be known as Tokyo Girls' School (also called Takebashi Girls' School). It was characterized by the enlightened and general education it offered, without gender discrimination. It was subsequently closed in 1877 due to financial difficulties, and re-opened in 1882 as the Tokyo Women's Normal School Attached Girls' High School, which was used as a model for secondary education institutions for women at the time. However, the educational policy there was changed to one of training good wives and wise mothers, with a focus on virtue. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
