Timisoara (English spelling)
Timiš County (area 8,692 km2 ; population 677,744 (2002 estimate)) is the capital of Timiš County in western Romania. It is located in the southeastern part of the Hungarian Plain, close to the borders with Hungary and Serbia, and the Vega Canal runs through the city. A fortress was built in the early 14th century, and the city was under Turkish rule from 1552 to 1716, came into possession of the Habsburgs in 1718, and became part of Romania in 1920. The population is mostly Romanian, Hungarian, Serbian, and German. After World War II, it developed rapidly as a commercial and industrial center in the southwest, with factories producing machinery, electrical equipment, chemicals, textiles, lumber, and food. It is also a key location on the international railway line connecting the capital Bucharest with Belgrade in Serbia. In addition to the university founded in 1945, medical, technical and agricultural universities, a national theater and an opera house, there are the ruins of the castle of the Hunyadi family, which was built in the 15th century and later restored, and an 18th century Catholic cathedral. In 1989, protest demonstrations broke out against the massacre of Hungarian residents that took place here, which expanded into a nationwide revolution and led to the collapse of Nicolae Ceausescu's dictatorship. Population: 334,098 (1997 estimate).
